Conan O’Brien’s Clueless Gamer Returns as He Takes on a Game Featuring Himself
When Conan O’Brien hosted his talk show on TBS, Clueless Gamer was a fan-favorite segment. While new episodes have been scarce since Conan ended, the series made a triumphant return this week with a fresh installment featuring the director’s cut of Death Stranding—a game in which O’Brien himself has a cameo.
Reunited with Aaron Bleyaert for the segment, O’Brien endured a lengthy explanation of the intricate lore behind Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece. Between exaggerated pleas for help and pretending to fall asleep, O’Brien’s comedic timing was on full display.
Eventually, O’Brien took the controller to step into the shoes of Sam Porter Bridges (played by Norman Reedus). True to form, he immediately turned a solemn moment—disposing of Sam’s mother’s body—into a comedy of errors. With a series of slapstick falls and sarcastic commentary, O’Brien handed the reins back to Bleyaert, keeping the mood light in stark contrast to the game’s intense narrative.
O’Brien also recounted his trip to Japan, where he was scanned for his cameo as an NPC in the game. Kojima makes a brief appearance in the segment to guide O’Brien to his digital doppelgänger, who rewards players with a Sea Otter Suit for swimming. Upon encountering his in-game self, O’Brien declared, “Oh my God, I hate him, and he’s me.”
To wrap things up, O’Brien jokingly pitched Kojima the idea of making him a more heroic character in a future project. Kojima playfully invited him back to Japan for another scanning session, this time with upgraded technology.
Death Stranding: Director’s Cut recently launched on Xbox Series X|S, following its exclusive run on PS4 and PS5. Meanwhile, anticipation builds for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, set for release in 2025. The sequel promises new adventures, returning characters, and quirky surprises including a talking, singing doll.
